Outbuilding Gite

Many farm owners have converted outbuildings to vacation gites, or mini-apartments.  Renting a gite can give you the flavor of Provence at a more affordable price than a hotel.

This one was rustic, had all of the amenities and was located in a vineyard.

A Wonderful Rustic Hammeau House

A hammeau is a collection of buildings that is usually around a farm, but too small to be a village or have a church.  Typically the adult children of the farmer and the wives and children would live in the hammeau, with the farmer owning the largest house.

This hammeau was walled and one can see the arch to the courtyard gates.  The open area was atop the stable which is immediately below it.

This stone building exudes charm and elegance from days gone by.

Topiary of Provence

Topiary and shaping trees is a craft that one sees all through Provence.  This example was on the lawn of a mas.  Aesthetics are an important part of life, even on your lawn.

The Luberon Valley

The Luberon Valley is one of the most scenic places in Provence.  The hills can be seen in the background with the villages climbing the sides of the hills.  This was taken near the village of Apt.

Elegant Classic Provencal Window

This classic elegant Provencal window was photographed in the ocher town of Rousillon.  Note the ocher in the building.  The windows are elegant and classic French style.

Springtime in the Olive Grove

Little olives are starting to form on the olive trees in the grove.  Provence is noted for its olive oil and olive harvests.

Fruits, Vegetables, Wines and a Creamery -- all in one building

The main street of town shuts down in the evening.  The plane trees or plantane tower over the street.  I do like the sign on the left advertising Fruits, Vegetables, Wines and a Creamery all in one place.  Have I told you that I love Provence?

Crossroads in a Quiet Town

Around sundown, the village inhabitants are in there homes, preparing an evening meal, and the quiet streets, even the normally busy crossroads are quaint and quiet again.  Even in the village, there is a plethora of trees, bushes and greenery that is ubiquitous in Provence.

Intriguing Ironwork over door

What blows me away is the attention to detail in the buildings in Provence.  This is a wrought iron roof over a doorway housing a light.  The attention to detail, craftsmanship and artistry on the simplest of things gives pleasure to the eye, in Provence.
