Stone Fence and Lavender Fields Coming Into Bloom


Just over the stone fence is a lavender field.  It is late spring and the lavender is just coming into bloom.  Soon it will totally color the field and perfume the air.

This is what the lavender plant looks like in early spring before it flowers.

Fields of Lavender


Lavender is in bloom and starting to perfume the air in Provence.  It built a whole economy on lavender and the making of its perfume and products.

Lavender and Provence go hand in hand.  I have seen lavender used everywhere, even in cookies as a flavour.  Here is a picture of an old time lavender cart used to haul the harvest away for processing.

Lavender For Sale on Market Day

From a distance, I thought that this was a basket of sausages being offered for sale on market day.  It turns out to be lavender tied in traditional cloth print fabric of Provence.  It is a treat for the eyes and a treat for the nose as well.

Lavender Art

Besides ocher and vineyards, Provence is also known for it lavender fields. Pictured outside this souvenir shop, is lavender art.
