Climbing to the top tier of a hilltop village

The laneway becomes steeper and steeper as you climb your way to the top tier of hilltop village.  Note the plants still growing almost everywhere that they can.

Sleepy Village Street in the Afternoon

A sleepy village street reposes in the afternoon sun.  The roadway narrows down into a laneway.  Flowers perfume the air and the beauty of Provence is everywhere you look.

Along A Hammeau Lane

A rustic country laneway winds through a hammeau, and the path is lined by irises growing wild.  A cherry tree, the blossoms already gone is in the background.  This is Van Gogh country at its finest in the spring.

The Blue Door

This is a laneway in a mountain-top village. The blue door is an entrance way to a village house.

Changes

If you were driving a car on this narrow village lane, you would be majorly surprised. The road ends in steps.

Notice that in the medieval days when the mountain top village was different, there was a doorway in the wall. Now it is all bricked in except for a small portico for the milkman.

A resident told me that if you lived in a village house, you may have a passageway through someone elses house, or that the room directly above you belongs to the house next door. Village houses are fascinating.

Sleepy sunny village lane

Medieval village lanes too narrow for cars, studded with the flowers and vines at the doors of the village houses are the hallmarks of the picturesque Provencal villages.
