A Field of Poppies

Everyone associates fields of poppies with Flanders and Belgium due to the poem.  However Provence is also filled with fields of wild poppies that are beautiful.

Poppies by an ancient canal

This ancient canal was hand-dug in the 1500's as an irrigation canal.  It is located in the Camargue region of Provence.  Poppies bloom canal-side in the spring.

It is a late spring in Provence, but the fields of poppies are blooming.  When the sun catches them at just the right angle, they glow with a beautiful crimson.  This field was near the town of Eyragues.

A Poppy Emerges

The ubiquitous poppy growing wild adds its scarlet highlights to the colours of Provence.

Poppies and Old Vines


Poppies grow wild in the margins of an old vine vineyard. The grape branches are cut back every year since grapes only grow on new wood. So the bottoms of the vines grow thicker and thicker with age.
